Advancing Cancer Research:
How MKF is Supporting
Pioneering Research

Ovarian cancer remains one of the most challenging cancers to detect and treat successfully. Despite advances in medicine, survival rates have not improved as much as for other cancers. Mackenzie Keiper Foundation is committed to supporting research that could change the future for women affected by ovarian cancer, as well as supporting research for other cancers too. By providing donations to doctors and laboratories conducting groundbreaking research and developing clinical trials, the foundation aims to accelerate progress and bring hope to patients and families.

Supporting Leading Researchers at MD Anderson

The foundation’s current support focuses on two prominent researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center: Dr. Anil Sood and Dr. Katy Rezvani. Both doctors are known for their dedication to advancing cancer research through innovative approaches.

  • Dr. Anil Sood specializes in understanding the molecular mechanisms that drive ovarian cancer progression and resistance to treatment. His research focuses on how cancer cells interact with their surrounding environment—insights that could lead to new therapies to stop tumors from growing or spreading. We are especially encouraged by his team’s work on a multi-assay cancer detection test, which has the potential to identify the presence of many types of cancer long before they reach advanced stages. We are proud to support this research because we are deeply passionate about advancing early detection for ovarian cancer and all cancers, believing it can change outcomes and save lives.

  • Dr. Katy Rezvani focuses on immunotherapy, an innovative approach that harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer. She leads pioneering research on natural killer cells and the development of new cell-based therapies designed to target a wide range of cancers. Her work aims to develop treatments that enhance immune responses specifically against cancer cells, with the potential to improve outcomes for patients.. Compared to traditional chemotherapy, these immunotherapy approaches often offer the benefit of fewer short- and long-term side effects.

By funding these researchers, Mackenzie Keiper Foundation helps support clinical trials, laboratory experiments, and the development of new treatment strategies that might otherwise face financial barriers.

These researchers are particularly special to us at MKF as Dr. Sood was one of the doctors who weighed in on Mackenzie's treatment plans, surgeries, and other aspects of her care as part of the GynOnc Department at MD Anderson. Additionally, immunotherapy was an important part of Mackenzie's treatment (& her mom Kim’s breast cancer treatment) and research to further immunotherapy as a leading treatment for ovarian & other cancers could mean more targeted & effective treatments with fewer side effects in the future, ultimately improving outcomes and survival rates.

Why Funding Research Matters

Cancer research requires significant resources. Developing new treatments involves years of laboratory work, clinical testing, and collaboration among scientists and doctors. Donations help cover costs such as:

  • Laboratory equipment and supplies

  • Patient enrollment in clinical trials

  • Data analysis and publication of findings

  • Training for young researchers and clinicians

Without financial support, many promising ideas remain unexplored. The foundation’s contributions help ensure that innovative projects continue moving forward, increasing the chances of breakthroughs that can save lives.

How You Can Help

Mackenzie Keiper Foundation invites individuals and organizations to join us in supporting cancer research. Donations directly impact the work of physicians and researchers like Dr. Anil Sood and Dr. Katy Rezvani, helping to advance new treatments and improve survival outcomes. The MKF Board is continually seeking additional researchers and initiatives that align with our mission, ensuring we support innovative work that brings hope to patients and families.

Supporting research is a meaningful way to honor those affected by ovarian & other cancers and contribute to a future where this disease is more manageable and even curable. Every gift, no matter the size, helps build momentum toward that goal.
